We want to help you find the best things for your dog without having to dig around all over timbuktu. There's a lot of junk out there. It makes us sad to watch people spending their hard-earned money on things that fall apart, don't fit or are even dangerous for their dogs. Some of the most reputable stores and websites out there claim to test all their products but it simply isn't true! We thoroughly test everything on a variety of dogs and the process of vetting a new product for the website can take several months or even more than a year.
If it's crap, it doesn't make the cut. No exceptions.
We also strive to arm people with knowledge and the proper tools & gear because it has the power to keep dogs happy, healthy and in their homes forever. Every day, thousands of well-meaning people give up on their dogs because of very treatable health or behavioral issues (allergies/sensitive skin, dog reactivity, house soiling, separation anxiety, destructive behavior, etc). Owners having easy access to the right products & resources to help eliminate these problems can help the adoption "stick".
Although this store was developed with all dogs in mind, our main focus is on "pit bull-types" who have been rescued. We believe that with proper exercise, training, socialization & nutrition, every dog has the potential to become an ambassador. Our dogs bring us so much joy–they make us laugh, they comfort us, they're expert cuddlers and they give the best kisses! We want to help keep our dogs and yours happy, healthy and on the planet for as long as possible.
We donate a minimum of 15% of our profits, plus all manufacturers' samples & overstock items to rescues, advocacy groups and other non-profits that promote the human-canine bond. The smaller organizations that are often working in the shadow of large, well-known and well-funded organizations are of particular interest to us. We also donate towards the care of individual dogs in need on a case-by-case basis. Click here for a list of most of the non-profits we've donated to since 2013. And by all means, please email email@example.com if you'd like for us to add your favorite charity to our donation roster!
Please donate/volunteer/foster for a rescue or shelter and if you can't, get on facebook and help network some dogs! You CAN make a difference!
**PLEASE NOTE: Although we've chosen to gear the store towards bully breed dogs, most of the items we carry will work for any medium to large dog. Some items even come in tiny sizes! If you don't see your dog's size listed, we can most likely get it for you, so email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
How we got started
It's actually kind of embarrassing how much stuff we've bought for the dogs in our care throughout the years. At one point, our current dogs had a closet bigger than ours. And about half of it was totally wrong for them. Ever tried to put a "3XL" hoodie on your 45-pound dog, only to find it won't even fit over his chest but it's 4 inches too long? Yep…we bought about 25 of those. Have you found a mysterious pile of rubber crumbs on the floor only minutes after you gave your dog a new toy? Yikes. Then there are those puzzles that are supposed to occupy your dogs' interest and make them smarter. Ha! Ours just looked at us like we were idiots and then proceeeded to take turns eating the puzzle.
We felt like no one bothered to make things with our dogs in mind. But after a lot of trial and error, we realized we were wrong–there actually are some great products out there...but then the problem was we had to hunt for the good stuff all over the place. A local dog boutique sold this one great chew toy, the harness we liked was only available online and the t-shirts that fit both dogs were on yet another website. It was tough to keep track of who sold what and when or where we could get it. So we found ourselves wondering: why can't there just be one store that sells everything our dogs need?
That was the ah-ha moment. So after a ton of research, product testing and migraine-inducing work on our website, here we are! We created our dream shop for dogs and we're sharing it with the world. The hoodies & tees have shorter, wider proportions, all the toys are super-durable…we've got exercise equipment that will bring out your dog's inner athlete…the gentle grooming products we carry are safe for sensitive skin and all made in the USA…treats are low-ingredient, grain-free and also made here in America. Everything has been thoroughly tested, not only by our pups but also by our friends and family's dogs and the best testers of them all: our buddies who live in rescue & shelter facilities. We won't carry anything that hasn't been rigorously put to the test and the search never ends for new products we can truly say are "fit for a pit"!
Have fun shopping and let us know if we can help you find exactly what your dog needs!
HEATHERPhilly native with a background in visual art and a lifelong love of dogs! I spend my days filling and shipping all the fit4apit.com orders and working for my non-profit, DFW Pit Crew (an organization that helps keep dogs in their homes through training, socialization & education). OLIVE Born in Las Vegas in early 2009, adopted by us from Craigslist. Yes, Craigslist. Nicknames: Miss Momma, Miss Mums, Miss O, Olivina, Olly Oll, The Horse, Fun Police, Auntie and Chewbacca. She's a natural athlete with way too much energy..up for just about anything, as long as it doesn’t involve riding in the car. Extremely dog-friendly, loves to make wookie sounds and runs like a greyhound. Diagnosed with epilepsy in 2012. She excels at high-speed fetch, running for prolonged periods of time, agility, swimming, lure coursing and flyball. She also loves to wear sweaters, especially ones with hoods.
DIO born sometime around New Year's 2010, pulled by me from the Las Vegas city shelter 1 day before his expiration date. Nicknames: Little Moose Man, Mr. D, Ronnie James, RJ, "Fritz" (his shelter name lol) He loves catching a disc and has jumped as high as our heads. Also loves to sunbathe, play hide-and-seek, nap in the backyard with his butterfly friends and do zoomies in our clean laundry. He's a pretty quiet fella but when you come back home, he makes noises like a moose way off in the distance. We've named this "Call of the Wild". Dio is dog reactive but that's only a small part of who he is. He's a silly, goofy, mushy guy with a hilarious sense of humor.
OZZY The youngest of the 3, we think he fell to Earth in the early spring of 2015. I grabbed him off the streets of Dallas on 9/9/2015. Nicknames: Oz, Mr. Cotton, Little Guy and Little Sh*t. Another natural-born athlete and a professional at opening doors, gates and windows. People love Ozzy's old-timey look and his compact size makes him easy to scoop up and snuggle. Ozzy and Dio are completely in love. Ozzy is a practical joker and doesn't appear to need sleep. Like, ever.
